Class 6 Science NCERT: An Overview of the Syllabus

There are a total of 16 chapters that are a part of the Class 6 Science NCERT. These chapters have been carefully picked out by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The aim of these chapters is to help students achieve a basic understanding of everything that is taught in the three branches of science. Reading the chapters provided in Class 6 Science NCERT will also help students understand scientific facts that can be helpful in their day-to-day life. Here is an overview of what students will learn in each chapter.

Chapter 1: Food – Where Does it Come From?

As the name suggests, the first chapter in Class 6 Science talks about what we define as food and what are the different resources from where we get our food. The chapter includes various in-text activities that are meant to help students observe the food items they consume on a daily basis and where they get them from. Students shall be able to categorize the food items they can get from plants and animals after reading this chapter.

Chapter 2 – Components of Food

This chapter will teach students about various components of the food we consume on an everyday basis. There are various components like carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, etc. that students will learn about. Through this chapter’s understanding, students will also be able to learn about how various food components affect our health, what is known as a balanced diet, and how it is important for everyone. 

Chapter 3 – Fibre to Fabric

The third chapter in Class 6 Science will introduce to students the various processes that are involved in making fabric from just fibres. In simpler terms, the chapter discussed the whole procedure of preparing cloth from different types of raw materials. The chapter classifies the raw materials as being obtained from plants and animals. Students shall also be able to differentiate between the different kinds of fibres: natural and synthetic, and how these are obtained.

Chapter 4 – Sorting Materials into Groups

This chapter aims to provide students with an understanding of being able to categorize or sort different materials or objects around us based on the similarity of particular characteristics. Students will be able to enhance their observation skills by noticing different features like shapes, sizes, textures, etc. of the various materials that can be found in their surroundings.

Chapter 5 – Separation of Substances

Chapter 5 in Class 6 Science talks about different ways that can be used to separate substances on the basis of their original properties. As you go through the chapter, you will also read about the need for the separation of substances and various methods like filtration, decantation, churning, etc. that can help us. The Class 6 Science NCERT also provides students with different activities and examples to help them understand better.

Chapter 6 – Changes around Us

There are various different processes and activities that take place on a regular basis in the environment around us. The sixth chapter in Class 6 Science NCERT Solutions will help students observe such changes that occur in their surroundings and understand how and why these changes take place. Students shall also be able to classify these changes as reversible and irreversible.

Chapter 7 – Getting to Know Plants

The various types of plants that exist in our environment are innumerable. Chapter 9 – The Living Organisms and Their Surroundings

This is the chapter focusing on various living organisms and the surroundings they can be found in. It also explains what are the reasons for finding them in their respective surroundings only. With the help of Chapter 9 in Class 6 Science NCERT Solutions, students shall be able to learn about the different environments an organism can survive in.

Chapter 10 – Motion and Measurement of Distances

This chapter will take students through the evolution of transport based on the understanding of motion. Students shall be able to understand what motion means and what are its classifications. Another topic covered in this chapter is various methods and instruments used to measure the distance between particular objects. Students will also learn about the standard unit of measurement in various parts of the world.

Chapter 11 – Light, Shadows, and Reflections

The name of this chapter makes it obvious that it covers various details about lights, shadows, and reflections. Students will read about various factors related to these three concepts including important topics such as objects emitting and not emitting light, their applications, nature, and properties. Students will be able to understand how does light travel and how are shadows and reflections formed.

Chapter 12 – Electricity and Circuits

This chapter in Class 6 Science NCERT will provide students knowledge about various concepts like electricity, electric circuit, electrical devices, switch, insulators, and conductors. The chapter also covers other important subtopics like electric cells, their attachments, and terminals, connecting an electric cell to an electric bulb, components of an electric switch, how to make an electric circuit, etc. For providing an in-depth understanding of these concepts, this chapter includes various well-labeled diagrams as well.

Chapter 13 – Fun with Magnets

Through reading this chapter, students will learn about who discovered magnets and how. Further, there is a discussion about classifying magnetic and nonmagnetic materials based on their properties and various applications of such materials. Students shall be able to observe various objects around them that possess magnetic or nonmagnetic qualities. 

Chapter 14 – Water

This chapter is important as it provides knowledge about the necessity of water in our lives, its misuse, conservation, and various sources of water available on earth. Students shall be able to achieve awareness about the importance of saving water and avoiding its pollution. Through in-text activities provided in the Class 6 Science NCERT, students will be able to observe the daily usage of water at their homes and consider ways to save it.

Chapter 15 – Air Around Us

Chapter 16 – Garbage In, Garbage Out

The purpose of this chapter in Class 6 Science NCERT is to introduce to students the concept of waste management at the most basic level. Chapter 1 Nutrition in Plants

This chapter discusses the various modes of nutrition. It further gives the reader a detailed account of the various biological functions that the plants conduct through the stomata, chlorophyll and other components present in it.

Modes of nutrition such as Autotrophs, Heterotrophs and Saprotrophs have been discussed and how these biotic components establish a symbiotic relationship has been emphasized in this chapter.

Chapter 2 Nutrition in Animals

This chapter contains a description of the digestive system of the human body. It discusses the various compartments of the food canal, i.e.; (1) the buccal cavity, (2) food pipe or oesophagus, (3) stomach, (4) small intestine, (5) large intestine ending in the rectum, and (6) the anus. The chapter also discusses, in brief, the digestive system of a cow.

Chapter 3 Fiber to Fabric

This particular chapter discusses the various types of fibres, i.e., natural and synthetic fibres. It also gives a brief detail of the process of conversion of this fibre to fabric.

Chapter 4 Heat

The chapter brings the attention of the reader the phenomenon of heat transfer through Conduction, Conduction and Convection. The chapter also discusses the different types of material that conduct heat and the flow of heat.

Chapter 5 Acids, Bases and Salts

As the name of the chapter suggests the chapter deals with the nature of the substances that we see, eat or apply in everyday life. It further discusses as to how one can find out the nature of the substance through different tests. The chapter concludes by discussing the process of neutralization.

Chapter 6 Physical and Chemical Changes

In this chapter, the learner gets to know about the various changes that we encounter around us. Changes have been classified into physical and chemical changes. Terms like Chemical reaction Crystallization, Galvanization and Rusting have been discussed in great detail. Emphasis has been given on the activity part so that the concepts can be explained using everyday experiences.

Chapter 7 Weather, Climate and Adaptations of Animals to Climate

The chapter discussed the surroundings where plants and animals live. How do they adapt to their surroundings? It also mentions various components that affect the climate of a region. Further, it elaborates upon the different types of climates witnessed worldwide.

Chapter 8 Winds, Storms and Cyclones

In class 6, it was established that moving air is called wind. Class 7 builds its content upon the concepts learnt in class 6 by conducting various experiments and showing how the air around us affects us. Terms like Hurricane, Tornado, Typhoon and Thunderstorm have been introduced.

Chapter 9 Soil

The chapter discussed the various components of soil, soil formation and the different types of soil. Does it also discuss as to how the surroundings where plants and animals live affect them? It also elaborates upon the fact as to how plants, animals, and microorganisms together constitute biotic components.

Chapter 10 Respiration in Organisms
